Statehood Day: Jharkhand Celebrates Silver Jubilee with Cultural Festivities; Leaders Extend Wishes

Ranchi — Jharkhand celebrated its Silver Jubilee on Saturday with a vibrant state-level event at Morabadi Ground in Ranchi, drawing thousands of attendees, including tribal groups, schoolchildren, officials, and performers.

Throughout the state, districts hosted parades, cultural shows, sports events, and community gatherings as people marked 25 years since Jharkhand was carved out of Bihar on November 15, 2000. The day was intentionally chosen to honour the birth anniversary of Bhagwan Birsa Munda — the legendary tribal freedom fighter and social reformer whose legacy is foundational to Jharkhand’s identity. This year marks his 150th birth anniversary.

Birsa Munda’s Ulgulan movement — a revolt against British exploitation — remains a milestone in the fight for tribal rights and self-determination.

The journey toward Jharkhand’s creation began when the Bihar Assembly passed a resolution for a separate state on July 22, 1997. The Bihar Reorganisation Bill, passed by Parliament on August 2, 2000, under Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s leadership, formally paved the way for the new state.

Chief Minister Hemant Soren extended warm greetings, honouring tribal icons such as Birsa Munda, Sidho-Kanho, and Phool-Jhano. He said the state’s 25-year progress reflects its resilience and growth. “Jharkhand has progressed from a phase of struggle to one of stability, and from stability to prosperity,” he said.

He emphasised that the next chapter of development will focus on inclusive growth, strengthened infrastructure, and the protection of tribal communities’ rights and dignity. The Chief Minister called on citizens to work together to build a future where Jharkhand becomes a model of cultural pride, social equity, and progress.

Governor Santosh Kumar Gangwar, in his message, said that completing 25 years represents the state’s “remarkable achievements across agriculture, industry, sports, arts, and social welfare.”
