Sarhul Festival: Ritual of crab & fish catching performed

Ranchi: A day before Sarhul, the tradition of catching crab and fishing was completed on Sunday.

This tradition was completed by Jaglal Pahan, the chief pahan of Hatma. On Sunday morning the Pahan visited various ponds of Ranchi and caught crab and fish.

It is said that a day before Sarhul, crab and fish caught in the morning are tied with thread in the kitchen and hanged in the evening which is released in the field at the time of sowing paddy in the rainy season which is considered to be the tradition of Jharkhand.

Further, the main Pahan also kept water in two pots at Sarna Sthal. While keeping the matka, worship was done according to the traditional rituals. On the day of Sarhul in the morning by looking at the water of the pot the Pahan will make predictions regarding the rain. There is also a custom of offering sacrifices on this day.

Chickens will be sacrificed at Sarna Sthal. Ranguwa Rooster will be sacrificed to Mother Earth, Water God and Mountain God. On the other hand, a white rooster will be sacrificed to the Sun God. Along with this, the fruits and flowers in the trees will be dedicated to the deity.

A procession will be taken out on Monday as part of the Sarhul festival where women will be participating in the procession wearing red and white sari and men wearing dhoti-ganji. The procession will reach the Sarna site with traditional Dhol, Dhak, Mandar. People will return to their respective homes by putting sakhuva flowers in their ears and taking blessings from Sarna Maa.

During the procession, an arrangement of drinking water will be made at various squares of the city. Along with this, there will also be mobile toilets at places.
