MP Chandraprakash Chaudhary files petition in SC over OBC reservation in panchayat polls

Ranchi: AJSU party’s Giridih MP ChandraPrakash Chowdhary has filed a petition in the Supreme Court to ensure reservation for backward classes in Panchayat elections in Jharkhand.

In this, the Jharkhand Government and the State Election Commission have been made a party.  It has been said in the petition that the Jharkhand government wants to conduct panchayat elections without giving reservation to the backward classes.  The petitioner has said that by forming a commission under the triple test, the imperial data of the backward classes has to be collected and on the basis of this, the provision of giving reservation to the backward classes in the panchayat elections is to be implemented.

It has also been said that in the light of the order of the Supreme Court, it is necessary for the state government to constitute a committee to conduct triple testing to give reservation to the backward classes in the panchayat elections before holding the panchayat elections.

In the light of the order of the Supreme Court, the Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh governments have banned the conduct of panchayat elections in their respective states and have also constituted a committee for triple testing.  It will be in the interest of the backward classes to constitute a committee to conduct triple testing before the elections to give reservation to the backward classes in the Panchayat elections like Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh.

The backward class population in Jharkhand is 55 percent.  The Jharkhand government is trying to conduct panchayat elections without giving reservation to the backward classes.  The petitioner has also referred to the case of Krishnamurth and others Vs Government of India 7 SCC and 2021 6 SCC 73 Vikas Kishan Rao Gawli Vs Government of Maharashtra.
