New Delhi: India’s gross Goods and Services Tax (GST) collections surged to an all-time high of ₹2,42,702 crore in April, marking an 8.7% year-on-year growth, according to official data released on Friday.
After adjusting for refunds, net GST revenue stood at ₹2,10,909 crore, reflecting a 7.3% annual increase. Refunds during the month rose sharply by 19.3% to ₹31,793 crore, indicating improved processing efficiency.
The strong performance was largely driven by import-related revenues. GST collected from imports jumped 25.8% to ₹57,580 crore, while domestic revenue saw a moderate rise of 4.3%, reaching ₹1.85 lakh crore.
The April figures build on March’s robust performance, when gross GST collections crossed ₹2 lakh crore, registering an 8.8% increase compared to the same period last year.
For the full financial year 2025–26, gross GST collections grew 8.3% to ₹22.27 lakh crore, up from ₹20.55 lakh crore in FY25. Net GST revenue for the fiscal stood at ₹19.34 lakh crore, marking a 7.1% increase.
Experts attribute the steady rise in GST collections to resilient economic activity, supported by rising consumption, higher imports, and better tax compliance. The trend aligns with India’s projected GDP growth of around 7%, highlighting sustained momentum despite global uncertainties.
However, cess collections during April saw a decline, slipping into negative territory at ₹(-177) crore, mainly due to higher refunds and accounting adjustments.
