Ranchi: The High Court on Tuesday pulled up the state government over the poor condition of Ranchi’s internal and approach roads, asking why funds were not released for their repair despite multiple requests from the Ranchi Municipal Corporation (RMC).

The division bench of Chief Justice M.S. Ramachandra Rao and Justice Rajesh Shankar was hearing a public interest litigation (PIL) filed by Shubham Kataruka, highlighting the dilapidated condition of secondary roads in the city, particularly around Bada Talab, where large potholes have been hindering traffic and even causing difficulties for ambulances carrying patients.

During the hearing, the court directed the Ranchi District Legal Services Authority (DLSA) to conduct a survey and submit a report on the state of these roads.

The court noted that RMC had written to the urban development department on September 25, 2024, and again on March 6, 2025, seeking approval of funds for the repair of roads including Lalji Hirji Road, Vishnu Talkies Lane, Madhukam Road, and Mount Motor Road. The bench asked the government to explain why no funds were sanctioned in response to these requests.
