Ranchi: Leader of the Opposition in the Jharkhand Assembly, Babulal Marandi, has strongly criticized the state government’s decision to rename Dr. Shyama Prasad Mukherjee University as Veer Buddhu Bhagat University. Terming the move “highly unfortunate,” Marandi said it sets a wrong precedent and undermines both institutional stability and respect for historical legacy.
He argued that such actions do not honor either Dr. Shyama Prasad Mukherjee or the revered freedom fighter Veer Buddhu Bhagat. According to Marandi, if the government genuinely wanted to honor Buddhu Bhagat, it should have established a new university in his name. Replacing the name of one great personality with another, he said, diminishes the legacy and contributions of both.
Marandi also alleged that the decision appears to be politically motivated and aimed at diverting public attention. He has urged the government to revoke the renaming decision immediately and instead announce the establishment of a new university in the name of Veer Buddhu Bhagat. Such a move, he said, would be a meaningful and lasting tribute to the freedom fighter, while also creating new educational opportunities for the youth of Jharkhand.
He further stated that if the government takes this positive initiative, the opposition will extend full support, as it would not only honor Buddhu Bhagat’s legacy but also contribute to the educational development of the state.
