Ranchi: In a significant step toward making urban sanitation smarter and more transparent, the Ranchi Municipal Corporation (RMC) has begun integrating advanced technology into the city’s waste collection system. The initiative aims to enhance monitoring and accountability in daily sanitation operations.
As part of the project, Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) tags are being installed on dustbins across the city. Simultaneously, RFID readers are being mounted on garbage collection vehicles. When a vehicle collects waste from a tagged bin, the reader scans the RFID tag, and the data is automatically recorded in the system.
So far, more than 80,000 bins across Ranchi have been fitted with RFID tags. Zone 3 has received around 30,000 tags, while Zone 4 has been equipped with 49,000. A trial run is currently underway using eight vehicles equipped with RFID readers. Eventually, all 150 newly deployed waste collection vehicles will be outfitted with this technology.
This smart sanitation initiative is being implemented with the support of a Bengaluru-based Swachhta Corporation. The company’s staff will monitor the entire system in real time, tracking the movement and activity of each vehicle.
Officials believe that the RFID-based monitoring will significantly reduce negligence in garbage collection and make the city’s sanitation services more efficient, accountable, and data-driven.
