Ranchi- Stand-in captain KL Rahul said the Indian team would be “more excited” if legendary cricketer MS Dhoni comes to watch the first ODI against South Africa at the JSCA International Stadium in Ranchi on Sunday. India will look to bounce back after a 2-0 Test series loss, and the match in Dhoni’s hometown adds extra significance.
Rahul, who made his ODI debut under Dhoni in 2016 with a century in Harare, will take on a familiar dual role—captaining the side, keeping wickets, and batting in the finisher’s slot, much like Dhoni once did.
“We’ve all played under him, admired him, and learned from him. Knowing someone like MS, who has achieved so much for India, is special for all of us,” Rahul said in Saturday’s pre-match press meet. “If he comes to watch the match, not just the fans but even we will feel more excited. We hope to play well, win the game, entertain the crowd, and make him happy.”
Rahul confirmed he will bat at number six and expressed excitement over the return of senior players Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli to the ODI squad.
“I’ve been batting at number six since the Champions Trophy, so that remains the same. With all-rounders like Ravindra Jadeja, Washington Sundar, and Nitish Reddy, we’ll pick the best XI by evening,” he said. He praised Kohli’s ability to rotate strike and said younger players continue to learn from both Kohli and Rohit.
“Their presence lifts the whole dressing room. Experience like theirs gives confidence to the entire team,” he added.
Rahul also welcomed Ravindra Jadeja’s return to the ODI side after missing the Australia series. “Jadeja has been doing the job for India for years. He was key in our Champions Trophy win—bat, ball, and fielding. His experience is invaluable for any captain.”
He spoke highly of opener Ruturaj Gaikwad, who is back in the squad and likely to get an opportunity during the series. “Rutu is a top-class player. The top order is quite settled, so chances are limited, but with a few injuries, he’ll get his chance. His skill has never been in question.”
Rahul concluded by saying that if Rishabh Pant makes the playing XI on Sunday, Pant will take the wicketkeeping duties. “Pant has been with the team for a long time, and everyone knows his value. If he’s in the XI, he’ll keep wickets, and I’ll field.”
