Ranchi: The Jharkhand government has enforced a complete ban on tobacco-based gutkha and pan masala, warning that those caught selling such products could face jail time. The move comes as part of a broader effort to safeguard public health across the state.
According to an official notification issued by Additional Chief Secretary of the Health Department, Ajay Kumar Singh, the ban covers the production, storage, sale, and distribution of all products containing tobacco or nicotine, irrespective of how they are marketed or named.
The action has been taken under the provisions of the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, specifically Section 30(2)(a), along with Regulation 2.3.4 of the 2011 rules governing prohibited sales. The restriction will remain effective for one year starting from the date of notification.
Health experts have long warned that nicotine in such products is a major cause of cancer and addiction, particularly among the youth. In response, the government has adopted a zero-tolerance approach and aims to dismantle the entire supply network.
With immediate effect, storing these products in warehouses or manufacturing them within the state is illegal. The ban also extends to both retail and wholesale trade. Anyone found violating the order will be subject to strict legal action, including fines and imprisonment.
Order Summary:
To protect public health, all forms of gutkha and pan masala containing tobacco or nicotine are banned from being manufactured, stored, sold, or distributed in Jharkhand for one year from the date of issuance, as per the relevant provisions of the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, and associated regulations.
