Ranchi — A shocking case of alleged reckless driving unfolded in Ranchi’s Doranda area on Tuesday, where a young man was dragged for several kilometres by a Mercedes car after he objected to the vehicle hitting a woman.
The driver, identified as Jharkhand High Court lawyer Manoj Tandon, has been detained by police.
The incident occurred near Rajendra Chowk under the Doranda police station limits. Reports suggest the car first struck a woman. When a bystander intervened and attempted to stop the vehicle, the driver allegedly tried to mow him down.
The youth was trapped on the bonnet as the car sped away, continuing for kilometres despite attempts by Home Guard personnel to halt it.
Allegations also state that the injured youth was later taken to the accused’s residence and assaulted.
Police, acting swiftly, pursued the vehicle, rescued the victim, and took the lawyer into custody. The injured man was sent for medical examination.
The episode sparked public outrage, with crowds assembling outside Doranda police station demanding stern action. The case also came up before the Jharkhand High Court.
The Bar Association informed the court about the detention and requested protection for the lawyer against possible mob aggression.
A bench headed by Chief Justice M.S. Sonak remarked that the rule of law applies equally to all and instructed police to act in accordance with statutory provisions.
The court declined to grant immediate relief but asked the state’s Advocate General to work with police to ensure the detained lawyer’s safety.
Authorities confirmed that the investigation remains underway.
