Guv summons Speaker over impasse on chair of leader of opposition in assembly

Ranchi: The Raj Bhawan has issued a summon to Speaker Ravindranath Mahto over the impasse prevailing in the assembly over appointing the leader of the opposition.

On Friday a delegation of the BJP led by state unit president and Rajya Sabha MP Deepak Prakash had called on Governor Draupadi Murmu at the Raj Bhawan and handed her a memorandum urging her to intervene in the matter of appointing the leader of the legislature wing of BJP Babulal Marandi as leader of opposition inside the assembly.

It is being viewed that over the same matter the Speaker has been summoned. Ravindranath Mahto had confirmed that he has received a summon from the Raj Bhawan. He said that since Governor is sitting on the constitutional post therefore he would apprise her over the matter.

In the previous assembly, Babulal Marandi had won as JVM-P candidate from Dhanwar seat after which he merged his party with the BJP. The election commission first recognized the merger and later during the Rajya Sabha polls declared Babulal Marandi as a BJP voter.

Since joining the BJP Babulal Marandi had been unanimously declared the leader of the legislature wing of the BJP and official information was sent to the Speaker demanding the leader of the opposition chair for him as BJP is the largest party is opposition having 26 MLAs.
