Elephant found dead, forest department begins probe

Chandil : A tusked wild elephant was found dead on Thursday in Saparaum, located in Kukdu block of Chandil sub-division area, adjacent to the West Bengal border. Seeing the dead body of the elephant in the field, the villagers informed the forest department.

According to Villagers the said elephant was roaming in the area for the last four days and was in a very weak condition. Villagers told that after falling in the field on Wednesday night, the elephant could not get up again.

There is a possibility that the elephant may die during the night itself. As soon as the news of the elephant being found dead in the field was received, a large number of people came to see it. People started worshiping the dead elephant as per tradition.

When the elephant was found dead, Forester Radha Raman Thakur told that before its death, it was roaming in the surrounding area for the past several days. He was roaming alone after getting separated from the herd. He told that the said elephant had gone towards Ranchi with the herd about three months ago. He told that whether the elephant died naturally or was an accident will be known only after the post mortem report comes.

At present, the Forest Department team has left for the spot along with veterinary medicine. The veterinarian will do the post-mortem of the dead elephant. He told that two elephants have died this year. Also in the month of May, an old elephant died in Ichagarh area.
