Disciplines, cultivate critical thinking and foster multidisciplinary and scientific temper among students

Ranchi: The Ministry of Education (MoE) in association with the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE) is organizing an All India Education Summit to mark the 3rd anniversary of NEP 2020 on 29th and 30th July, 2023 which will be inaugurated under the chairmanship of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Under this, a Pre-Event Press Conference was organized on Tuesday at Indian Institute of Management (IIM), Ranchi to raise awareness among the public about the vision and envisaged aspects, provisions of the National Education Policy for restructuring the education and skill framework in India.

Director, Indian Institute of Management Ranchi, Prof. Deepak Kumar Srivastava mentioned that IIM Ranchi aims to be globally oriented and locally responsive.

He highlighted the initiatives taken by IIM Ranchi in line with the vision of the National Education Policy 2020.

IIM Ranchi has launched Integrated Program in Management (IPM) with a view to provide a multidisciplinary program that includes courses that will bring a positive change in the lives of students.

To promote flexibility of disciplines, cultivate critical thinking and foster multidisciplinary and scientific temper among students, the institute has introduced multidisciplinary elective courses, which include courses like Cinematography, Socratic Dialogue, Water Management, Sports Management , Drama and Theatre, Art and Painting, etc.

Apart from this, new courses like Science of Happiness, Sustainability, Social Work and Tribes in India have been introduced for holistic development. The institute has recently reviewed and updated the curriculum to suit the new age needs of industry and academia.

In order to dedicate IIM Ranchi’s resources to the society and bridge the gap between the Institute and its surroundings, the Institute launched the ‘Human Connect’ programme.

Also “Young Changemakers Program” was conducted as part of ‘Social Internship’, in which students from all over the country participated.

This live-case learning model provided a unique way for students to learn about tribal villages, understand their problems and work together to find practical solutions.

As part of its strategic plan ‘IIM Ranchi @ 2030’ to promote Indian knowledge system in compliance with NEP 2020, the institute has conceptualized research on “Indian Business Systems” and “Tribal Entrepreneurship”.

To promote skill development, IIM Ranchi in collaboration with the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship has implemented Mahatma Gandhi National Fellowship in Jharkhand and Tamil Nadu region.

Fellows of MGNF have been assigned to IIM Ranchi to work with the state of Tamil Nadu and Jharkhand to strengthen the skilling eco-system.

Vice Chancellor, Ranchi University, Dr. Ajit Kumar Sinha added valuable perspectives on how NEP has affected the educational scenario and policies in Ranchi University.

He said that after the introduction of National National Education Policy 2020, Ranchi University included NEP 2020 from the session starting from 2022.

Ranchi University is continuously working towards digitization of its various sections to facilitate the operational requirements of National Education Policy 2020.

As per this policy, new rules and syllabus have been prepared and teaching work has been started.

Some new professional courses have been introduced as per credit requirement, where students are given various options to choose their subjects in the faculty.

Efforts are being made to start an integrated B.Ed course.

It is pertinent to say that Ranchi University has played the role of a pioneer institute in Jharkhand towards the implementation of NEP 2020.

Ranchi University has successfully completed one year of NEP 2020 implementation, 1st session undergraduate students have easily appeared their exams under NEP 2020 syllabus.

Deputy Commissioner, Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan, DP Patel discussed the initiatives of Kendriya Vidyalayas which focuses on holistic development of students by improving the quality of education through various initiatives on training of teachers through workshops.

He mentioned that Kendriya Vidyalayas in recent years have promoted the use of technology to improve administrative and operational processes like online admission system for entry level across the country, e-collection of fees, online transfer portal, procurement of goods and services through GeM etc.

He also informed about various initiatives by Kendriya Vidyalayas of Ranchi region as per NEP 2020, such as Balvatika, Vidya Pravesh, National Curriculum Framework for Foundational Stage (NCF FS), e-Vidyanjali Portal, PM e-Vidya, Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat program etc.

Deputy Director, RDSD – Jharkhand, MSDE, and PK Madavi said that NEP lays emphasis on integration of vocational education in academic education to provide both academic and practical skills to the students.

Target has been allotted to more than 2000 institutes, including institutes of national repute, who have already started training in job roles of Assistant Mine Surveyors, GreenHouse Operators, Self Employed Tailors and Social Media Associates.

The NEP recognizes the importance of skill development for employability and career advancement. MSDE has also launched its Employability Skills Curriculum which has now been revised to make the trainees more industry ready.

Associate Dean Academics, NIT Jamshedpur, Dr. Mohd. Ashiq Hasan said that NEP has opened the doors of technical education to a large section of the society.

There will be multiple entry multiple exit keys. Technical education has to be viewed as a tool for innovation and holistic development with a human touch, working holistically and not in silos.

Faculty members of IIIT Ranchi, Dr. Shashikant Sharma and Dr. Jitendra Kumar Mishra said that IIIT Ranchi is currently aligning its engineering programs with the principles of the National Education Policy 2020, fostering a comprehensive and innovative learning experience for its students.

The institute is making various efforts to encourage multifaceted development such as curriculum restructuring, competency-based assessment, technology integration, interdisciplinary studies, creativity by industry collaboration, ethics and responsible AI, project-based learning, internship and industrial training, multilingualism, innovation and entrepreneurship, diversity and inclusion, faculty development, research focus, skill development workshops, capstone projects, mentorship programs, continuous feedback mechanism, etc.

He also said that IIIT Ranchi will also start a B. Tech program.

Which will specialize in cyber security and defence, the course is of four years duration with multiple exits available.
