Boat tragedy in Koderma: Eight including five teenagers feared dead

Koderma: Five teenagers are among the eight people who are being feared dead after a boat capsized in Panchkhero dam located under the Markachho Police Station area of the Koderma district on Sunday. There were ten people on the boat out of which two including the boatman managed to swim to safety while eight others including teenage boys and girls were drowned.

Locals said that a group of nine people hailing from Kheto village from Dhanwar block of Giridih had come for sightseeing at the dam during which they went for a boat ride which unfortunately capsized after getting into the middle of the dam. Those who are missing included Shivam Singh (17), Palak Kumari (14), Sitaram Yadav (40), his three children Sejal Kumari (16), Harshal Kumar (8), and Bauwa (5), Rahul Kumar (16) and Amit (14).

Father of Shivam and Palak, Pradeep Singh had managed to come out of the water apart from the boatman who fled from the spot after he too came out of the water. At the time of the filing of the story, not a single body has been recovered from the water despite NDRF being deployed in the rescue operations.

Koderma DC Aditya Ranjan said that an NDRF team of 15 people is involved in rescue operations. The district administration has made arrangements for lighting on the spot while NDRF is equipped with under lighting apparatus due to which the search was still on.

Apart from him Koderma SP and DC and SP of Giridih district are also camping on the spot along with several other local administrative and police officials. Earlier Chief Minister Hemant Soren said that necessary instructions have been issued to the district administration to conduct relief and rescue measures.

On the other hand, Union Minister of State for Education and Koderma MP Annapurna Devi in a tweet said that she was in pain after getting the news of 10 people drowning in Panchkhero Dam of Markachho out of which two have come out of water while efforts are on to rescue the remaining eight.

She said that she had spoken with DCs of Koderma and Giridih directed them to speed up rescue operations. The minister tweeted that teams of NDRF have been rushed to the spot.
