New Delhi- Dario Amodei, CEO of Anthropic, has issued a stark warning that an “AI tsunami” is approaching rapidly, cautioning that the world is dangerously unprepared for the speed at which artificial intelligence is advancing toward human-level capabilities.
Speaking on a podcast with Nikhil Kamath, Amodei said society is underestimating the economic, social and geopolitical disruption that advanced AI systems could trigger. He likened the current moment to a tsunami already visible on the horizon, even as many continue to downplay its significance.
“It’s like a tsunami coming straight at us. It’s close enough to see clearly, yet people keep telling themselves it’s just an illusion,” he remarked, highlighting a widespread sense of denial about AI’s pace and scale.
Amodei noted that AI’s impact will differ across professions. Jobs centred on human interaction, emotional intelligence and complex social dynamics may take longer to be affected. However, fields such as coding, mathematics and scientific research are already seeing rapid AI adoption, with systems increasingly capable of performing these tasks at a high level.
He also challenged traditional assumptions about data being the sole driver of AI progress, explaining that newer models are relying more on synthetic and self-generated data, especially in areas like mathematics and programming. According to him, this shift is accelerating AI development beyond what many expect.
While acknowledging the risks, Amodei struck a cautiously optimistic tone, saying AI could lead to breakthroughs such as curing major diseases. At the same time, he stressed the urgent need for responsible governance and preparedness.
Although AI is already handling a growing share of coding tasks, he said full end-to-end automation of software engineering may still take time — but could arrive far sooner than most people anticipate.
