UPSC writes letter to state government over removal of IPS KN Choubey

Ranchi: The Union Public Service Commission has written a letter to the state government seeking reasons under which it removed senior IPS officer Kamal Nayan Choubey within 9 months into his appointment as DGP of Jharkhand.

As per the guidelines of the Supreme Court, an IPS officer appointed on the post of DGP should remain on his post for at least two years. The UPSC has sought answers as to under what circumstances a senior officer was removed within nine months on his post. The Commission will now wait for the answer of the state government.

After DGP DK Pandey retired on May 31, 2019 he was replaced by a senior IPS officer of 1986 batch KN Choubey. He was appointed for a period of two years but after a new government under Chief Minister Hemant Soren came to power KN Choubey was transferred on March 16, 2020, and IPS officer of I987 batch MV Rao was appointed interim DGP of the state.

In the meantime, on July 30 a petition was filed in the Supreme Court challenging the appointment of MV Rao as DGP. A hearing, in this case, is scheduled on August 13 in the apex court.
