Jamshedpur: A disturbing incident at Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Hospital on Friday has raised serious questions about inmate supervision and hospital security after an undertrial prisoner died by suicide.
The deceased, identified as Ashok Kumar, was admitted to the hospital’s prisoner ward for treatment. Officials stated that he had a prior history of self-harm and had earlier attempted suicide while in jail, following which he was shifted to the hospital for medical care.
According to initial reports, the incident occurred when Kumar was being escorted by police personnel for a consultation. In a sudden move, he broke free, ran towards the edge of the seventh floor, and jumped before officers could stop him.
He suffered fatal injuries and died at the scene. The body has been sent for post-mortem examination, and an investigation is underway to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the incident.
Sources suggest that Kumar was under mental distress, which may have influenced his actions. The case has drawn attention to existing safety measures and monitoring systems in place for high-risk inmates within hospital premises.
Authorities are expected to reassess current protocols to prevent such incidents in the future.
If you or someone you know is struggling or feeling overwhelmed, reaching out to local mental health services or a trusted individual can make a difference.
