Deoghar: In a major crackdown on cybercrime, Deoghar police arrested two alleged cyber fraudsters from the Jasidih police station area for allegedly duping people by posing as customer care executives and bank officials. Two mobile phones and three SIM cards were seized from their possession.The action was carried out on June 26 under the direction of Superintendent of Police Praveen Pushkar and the leadership of Deputy Superintendent of Police Kailash Prasad Mahato.
Acting on a tip-off, police received information that the accused were impersonating customer care representatives of Flipkart, Amazon Pay, Airtel Payments Bank and PhonePe to cheat unsuspecting people.Following the information, a raid was conducted and the two suspects were taken into custody. They have been identified as Uday Das (21), a resident of Patardih, and Congress Yadav (24), a resident of Gadiya under Mohanpur police station in Deoghar district.
According to police, the accused allegedly posed as officials of Google Pay, PhonePe and Paytm customer care and lured victims with fake cashback offers to obtain banking details and commit fraud. They also allegedly sent malicious APK files in the name of the PM Kisan Yojana, electricity bill payments and RTO challans to gain remote access to victims’ mobile phones.The accused are also suspected of impersonating Airtel Payments Bank officials, misleading customers by claiming their Airtel Payments Bank cards had been blocked and then cheating them on the pretext of reactivating the cards through the Airtel Thanks app.
Police said a preliminary examination of the seized mobile phones and SIM cards indicated their involvement in cyber fraud. Technical analysis further revealed that the seized mobile numbers and IMEI numbers are linked to cybercrime complaints registered in several states. Further investigation is underway to identify other members of the network and establish the full extent of their activities.The raid was conducted by Jasidih police station in-charge Deepak Kumar, Assistant Sub-Inspectors Sachit Kumar Singh and Ramanuj Singh, along with the Jasidih police team.
