Hazaribagh: Three Bangladeshi nationals, including two women, escaped from the detention centre located within the Jayaprakash Narayan Central Jail premises in Hazaribagh, Jharkhand, officials reported on Monday.
The escape, which is believed to have occurred late Friday night or early Saturday morning, has raised serious concerns among local authorities.
The individuals who escaped have been identified as Reena Khan alias Fina Devi, Nazmul, and Nipah Akhtar Khushi.
Following their escape, police launched extensive search operations and alerted neighbouring districts. Their photographs and details have been circulated to police stations across the state to assist in their capture.
Hazaribagh Deputy Commissioner Shashi Prakash visited the detention centre for an immediate inspection and has ordered a full investigation into the incident. Senior officials also examined the site, and staff members are being questioned about the security breach.
Officials said the three had entered India illegally without valid travel documents and were arrested. After completing their prison terms, they were placed in the detention centre while awaiting deportation to Bangladesh.
Reena Khan had been in the centre since February 4, 2022; Khushi since September 28, 2024; and Nazmul since March 1, 2025. Prior to this, all three had served their sentences in different jails across Jharkhand.
Authorities had been trying to deport them, but no response had been received from the Bangladeshi government, delaying the process.
This is not the first such escape from the Hazaribagh detention facility. On March 8, 2021, two Bangladeshi nationals, Mohammad Javed alias Noor and Mohammad Zahid Hussain, escaped by breaking the window bars. Later, on September 13, 2021, a Myanmar national named Mohammad Abdullah also fled from the same centre.
The recurring nature of these incidents has raised serious concerns about the effectiveness of security measures at the detention centre.
