PM Modi Honors Birsa Munda on His Death Anniversary, Calls His Sacrifice an Inspiration for the Nation

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tribute on Monday to the legendary tribal leader and freedom fighter Bhagwan Birsa Munda on his 125th death anniversary, also observed as ‘Balidan Diwas.’ He described Birsa Munda’s life as a powerful example of courage, sacrifice, and dedication to the welfare of tribal communities and the nation.

On social media platform X, PM Modi wrote, “Respectful tribute to the great freedom struggle hero Bhagwan Birsa Munda ji on his Balidan Diwas. He devoted his life to the welfare of tribal brothers and sisters and fought to protect their rights. His sacrifice and commitment will always inspire our countrymen.”

Born on November 15, 1875, in Ulihatu village (now in Jharkhand), Birsa Munda emerged as a prominent leader against British colonial rule in the late 19th century.

Despite limited formal schooling, he united tribal communities to resist exploitation by British officials, landlords, and missionaries, and led a socio-religious movement aimed at reclaiming tribal identity and rights.

Revered by tribal people as ‘Dharti Aaba’ or ‘Father of the Earth,’ Birsa Munda gave his life for indigenous empowerment and resistance against colonial oppression. He died at the age of 25 while in British custody, leaving behind a lasting legacy of resistance and pride.

On November 15, 2024, PM Modi launched the year-long 150th birth anniversary celebrations of Birsa Munda on Janjatiya Gaurav Diwas in Jamui, Bihar. The event included the unveiling of development projects worth over ₹6,640 crore and the release of a commemorative coin and postage stamp.

During the event, PM Modi highlighted that Birsa Munda’s contributions had long been overlooked after Independence and stressed that these celebrations aimed to give rightful recognition to tribal heroes and history.

The government has declared November 15 as Janjatiya Gaurav Diwas to honour tribal freedom fighters and acknowledge their important role in shaping India’s independence and identity.
