Taniya Chatterjee responds to Chahal defamation row, says post was ‘innocent’

Mumbai — Actress Taniya Chatterjee has addressed the defamation case filed by Indian cricketer Yuzvendra Chahal, stating that she never intended to harm his reputation and had shared the interaction in a completely innocent manner.

In a conversation with IANS, Taniya said she continues to hold Chahal in high regard, emphasising that he has contributed significantly to the country as a sportsperson.

Reacting to reports that Chahal had messaged her calling her “cute,” she clarified that it was simply a casual exchange. According to her, there was nothing inappropriate about the message, adding that compliments should not be misconstrued.

Explaining the context, she said the topic came up during a discussion about the IPL, and she mentioned it without any ill intent. She maintained that she enjoys receiving compliments and shared the message in that spirit, not to defame anyone.

Expressing surprise over the legal action, Taniya said she does not believe her actions amount to defamation. She reiterated that she had only spoken positively about the cricketer and continues to respect him.

The controversy began during the second week of the IPL when a video of Taniya interacting with photographers went viral. In the clip, she was seen showing her phone and claiming that Chahal had responded multiple times to her Instagram stories, including a direct message complimenting her.

Following the viral spread of the video, Chahal moved legally, filing a defamation case against the actress.
