Strike in banks across Jharkhand hits banking services

Ranchi, Aug 22: Banking services across the state were hit as the public sector banks went on a strike on the call of the United Forum of the Bank Unions.

Member of the state bank a officers association central committee Patna circle Dhanjay Kashyap said that the strike was successful across the state. The bank employees have alleged that  the central government was trying to privatise the banks and was preparing to hand over the reigns of the economy to other private players. The banks had called the strike over new pay scale and new recruitments.

 

They alleged that instead of strengthening the government banks the government was breaking the morale of the employees by taking about unification of the banks. He said that on the issue the members of the forum would be staging a parliament gherao on September 15.

 

In strike the staffs and officials of SBI and other nationalized banks, regional banks and cooperative banks participated. The agitators have also demanded for facilities similar to those paid to the RBI and other central departments. However on the other hand the private banks in the state including ICICI, HDFC and Axis Bank reported normal functioning.

 

In Ranchi in the Bank of India circle office more than 250 officials and employees staged demonstrations. General Secretary of the  Bank of India officers Association Jharkhand State Sunil Lakra said that most of the demands of the bank employees has been pending for long and the central government was not taking the right action.

 

He said that due to retirement many posts were vacant due to which branches were facing staff crunch and there was need to do immediate recruitment. He said that the demand also included implementation of the recommendations made by the parliamentary committee for recovery of NPAs, strict action for recovery, withdrawal of proposed FRDI bill and doing away with the bank board bureau.
