Southwest Monsoon Reaches Kerala, Marking Start of India’s Crucial Rainy Season

Thiruvananthapuram: The southwest monsoon has officially arrived in Kerala, bringing much-needed relief and marking the beginning of India’s vital four-month rainy season that plays a key role in agriculture, water resources, and economic activity.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) announced the onset of the monsoon over Kerala on Thursday, three days later than its normal arrival date of June 1. Weather conditions had recently become favourable for the monsoon’s advance along the Kerala coast, paving the way for its arrival.

The onset of the monsoon in Kerala is one of the most closely watched weather events in the country, as it signals the start of the June-to-September rainfall season. After entering Kerala, the monsoon typically progresses northward in phases and covers most parts of India by mid-July.

The performance of the monsoon is particularly significant for India’s agriculture sector. Nearly 51 per cent of the country’s cultivated land depends directly on rainfall, making timely and adequate monsoon showers crucial for crop production and rural livelihoods.

A good monsoon not only benefits farmers but also supports broader economic activity. Improved rainfall generally boosts agricultural output, strengthens rural incomes, enhances consumer spending, and helps keep food inflation under control. As a result, businesses across sectors—including consumer goods, infrastructure, and trade—closely monitor monsoon trends.

The IMD had earlier indicated favourable conditions for the monsoon’s further advance across the Arabian Sea, the Bay of Bengal, Lakshadweep, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and adjoining regions.

While the monsoon’s arrival in Kerala does not translate into immediate rainfall across the country, it marks the formal beginning of its journey across India. Meteorologists will now closely track its pace and distribution in the coming weeks.

For a nation where agriculture, water availability, and economic growth remain deeply linked to seasonal rainfall, the first monsoon showers over Kerala signal the start of a season that can have far-reaching effects on India’s fortunes in the months ahead.
