SOP issued for use of emergency number 112, prompt assistance

Ranchi: The Jharkhand Police Headquarters has issued a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) to ensure the effective use of emergency number 112 and to facilitate prompt assistance during emergencies. All Superintendents of Police across the districts, along with the State Fire Officer, have been directed to adhere strictly to the SOP.

This SOP has been developed under the National Emergency Response System established by the Government of India. It aims to improve the efficiency and speed of emergency services accessible via the 112 helpline, making them more responsive to the public’s needs.

The SOP outlines the complete operation of emergency call handling, including the functioning of call-taking and dispatch workstations, the process for handling duplicate or similar calls, transferring and conferencing calls, and the roles and responsibilities of police personnel such as constables and head constables. It also includes guidelines for monitoring ongoing and pending calls, system supervision, blacklisting of repeat misuse, and generation of reports.

Additionally, the SOP addresses the use of mobile data terminals, details the responsibilities of rescue officers, and defines operational conditions, case handling protocols, event prioritisation, and the valid reasons for case closures. The objective is to ensure coordinated, timely, and professional emergency response services throughout Jharkhand.
