Dhanbad – A family in Jharkhand’s Dhanbad district had a narrow escape on Monday when their home collapsed in a sudden land subsidence in the Jogta area.
The house belonged to Kalyani Devi, who recalled the terrifying moments before the collapse: “We heard a loud explosion and felt vibrations. Somehow, we ran out just in time. Everything we owned is buried under the debris.”
The family, who built the house with borrowed money, is now left homeless and is appealing for food, shelter, and compensation.
The incident also caused the ground to crack open in several spots, creating deep pits that spread fear in the locality. Residents accused Bharat Coking Coal Limited (BCCL) and the administration of ignoring repeated warnings.
Land subsidence is a recurring danger in Dhanbad, worsened by decades-old underground mine fires. Despite frequent tragedies, thousands continue to live in vulnerable areas, often without adequate safety measures or rehabilitation.
