Ranchi: The Ranchi Municipal Corporation is set to intensify action against unlicensed lodges and hostels operating in the city. As the number of such establishments continues to grow rapidly, the civic body has warned that strict enforcement measures will soon follow against those violating municipal norms.
Sources said nearly 10,000 lodges and hostels are currently running in Ranchi, but only 81 have obtained valid licenses from the municipal corporation. The data reflects the alarming scale of unauthorized operations across the capital city.
Earlier in March, the corporation had issued notices asking all lodge and hostel owners to secure trade licenses and other mandatory approvals. Authorities had clearly stated that action would be initiated against operators failing to comply with the rules. Despite the warning, most establishments are still functioning without licenses.
The municipal commissioner has now announced that a special inspection campaign will be launched shortly. Teams will inspect documents related to licensing, fire safety, building security, hygiene standards, and other legal requirements. Operators found violating norms may face penalties, sealing of properties, and further legal proceedings.
Several localities, including Lalpur, Bariatu, Harmu, Kanke Road, Lower Bazar, and Doranda, have witnessed a sharp rise in lodges and hostels catering to students, job aspirants, and migrant workers. Given the large number of residents living in these facilities, safety and regulatory compliance have become critical issues.
Officials revealed that many establishments are operating from residential areas without registration and proper safety arrangements. In several cases, fire safety systems are either inadequate or completely absent, increasing the risk of major accidents. The corporation is currently preparing zone-wise records before starting the verification drive.
The proposed crackdown has already triggered panic among several operators, many of whom have now begun arranging licenses and updating their documents to avoid action.
