Makar Sankranti 2023: Kites market get buzzing in capital, Korean kites in great demand

Ranchi: As the festival of Makar Sankranti draws near the markets are buzzing with activities at the shops selling Tilkut and Gur but another big area that is seeing good business this time around is the market of kites and threads.

While people are buying Tilkut in the markets, shops selling kites and thread are also seeing a good turnout of buyers. For a change this time around there is a huge demand for Parachute kites which are made in Korea while ‘Manjha’ of Bareilly is also in good demand with children asking as usual for their cartoon character kites. 

A Kite trader at Karbala Chowk said that there is a demand for cartoon characters and kites having images of celebrities and moreover kites made of paper are in big demand. He said that even the management of various committees have brought kites which they plan to fly with the children on the occasion of Makar Sankranti. Another trader in Upper Bazar said that kites and other accessories have been brought from Kolkata, Ahmedabad, Patna, and Bareilly.

There are kites of various sizes in the market from six inch size to 60 inch which are in the range of Rs 3 to Rs 500 while the Korean parachute kite is selling in the market between Rs 80-500 while the Manjha is sold in the market in the range of Rs 20-Rs 250. As far as celebrity kites are concerned, those having images of Shahrukh Khan, Amitabh Bachchan and Salman Khan are in huge demand.
