Khijadia Bird Sanctuary Draws 52,400 Visitors, Strengthening Gujarat’s Eco-Tourism Profile

Gandhinagar: With more than 52,400 visitors recorded during 2024–25, the Khijadia Bird Sanctuary has further consolidated its position on Gujarat’s eco-tourism map, emerging as a leading example of conservation-driven development in the state.

As preparations intensify for the Vibrant Gujarat Regional Conference (VGRC), the Ramsar-listed wetland near Jamnagar is being highlighted as a symbol of Gujarat’s ecological strength and long-term commitment to sustainability.

Ahead of VGRC 2026, Khijadia has gained renewed prominence as one of the state’s most important natural assets. The Kutch and Saurashtra regions, in particular, have steadily developed into major tourism destinations, offering a unique mix of wildlife, coastal landscapes, spiritual centres, and rich cultural traditions.

From the White Rann of Kutch to Saurashtra’s beaches, pilgrimage routes and wildlife sanctuaries, the region presents a diverse and immersive travel experience. Spread across more than 600 hectares, Khijadia Bird Sanctuary is internationally recognised for its rare combination of freshwater and saline ecosystems, creating an ideal environment for diverse birdlife.

Data from the Forest and Environment Department show that the number of bird species recorded at the sanctuary increased from 317 in 2023–24 to 332 in 2024–25, reflecting its growing ecological vitality. Khijadia’s global importance was formally acknowledged in 2022, when it was designated a Ramsar Wetland of International Importance.

To support responsible tourism, the state government has upgraded visitor facilities, including watchtowers, eco-huts, bird-watching platforms, interpretation centres, selfie points and informative signage, while ensuring that conservation remains a priority. The sanctuary’s ecological strength lies in its dynamic habitat, where freshwater inflows blend with tidal movements from the coast, forming natural creeks and marshlands.

This diverse ecosystem supports multiple micro-habitats, making Khijadia one of India’s most vibrant birding destinations and a reflection of Gujarat’s planned and scientific approach to wetland conservation.

With the Vibrant Gujarat Regional Conference scheduled to be held in Rajkot from January 10 to 12, 2026, Khijadia Bird Sanctuary stands as a living showcase of Gujarat’s integrated development model, where environmental protection and economic growth progress together.
