Ranchi: In a significant political move, the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) has announced the suspension of its planned statewide agitation demanding the recognition of the Sarna/Tribal religious code, citing heightened national security concerns.
Addressing a press conference on Thursday, JMM general secretary Binod Pandey said that while the tribal religious code remains a longstanding and vital issue for Jharkhand, the current situation following the April 22 terror attack has shifted the party’s immediate priorities.
“This is not just a regional demand—it is the voice of our tribal society. But right now, the nation’s security is paramount. We stand united with our soldiers battling cross-border terrorism,” Pandey declared.
He reaffirmed that the demand for a Sarna/Tribal religious code, passed by the Jharkhand Assembly on November 11, 2020, and sent to the Centre, is non-negotiable. The party had earlier announced district-level demonstrations across Jharkhand starting May 5 to press for its implementation.
However, recent developments, including heightened tensions at the borders and a united national sentiment against terrorism, have led the party to reconsider its course.
“We are postponing—not withdrawing. The struggle for recognition will continue. But in the current environment, protest takes a backseat to patriotism,” Pandey said.
Responding to questions about JMM’s role in upcoming Bihar elections, Pandey said that internal preparations are on and proposals from local units are being assessed. He confirmed that JMM will hold further discussions with INDIA alliance partners before finalizing its electoral strategy.
“We are committed to contesting in Bihar where our organization is strong. Discussions with alliance partners are on track,” he added.
Binod Pandey closed the press conference with a call for unity: “Let’s stand with our armed forces as one nation. We can raise our voice for the tribal identity again—but today, our voice echoes with those guarding the borders.”
