Ranchi: In a landmark medical achievement, Dr. Ali Zaid Anwar of Dhanbad Medical College and Hospital successfully removed a 7.5-kilogram spleen tumour from a female patient—believed to be the heaviest spleen ever extracted in the world. This remarkable feat has not only set two potential world records but has also brought Jharkhand into the spotlight for its advancing healthcare capabilities.
Health Minister Dr. Irfan Ansari praised Dr. Anwar’s achievement, calling it a victory not just for one doctor, but for the entire healthcare ecosystem of Jharkhand. “Dr. Anwar is a shining example of medical integrity and excellence. Doctors who serve with honesty will always be honoured. It is my duty to recognize such commitment,” the minister said.
Currently, the heaviest spleen ever recorded in a female patient globally was 2.5 kg. Dr. Anwar’s surgical procedure, removing a tumour three times that weight, is now being submitted for inclusion in both the Guinness Book of World Records and the Limca Book of Records.
Speaking on the broader state of healthcare in Jharkhand, Dr. Ansari reiterated his commitment to bringing quality medical services to the most marginalized. “I am not just a doctor, but a true servant of health. Reaching the person at the last mile is my top priority,” he said.
He acknowledged the challenges in overhauling the system but stressed that progress is being made. “I do not fear criticism—it helps us improve. Change doesn’t happen overnight, but we are moving in the right direction,” he added.
Dr. Ansari said that negligence in healthcare delivery would not be tolerated under any circumstances, and that recognition and morale-boosting of sincere doctors would remain a key focus.
This historic surgery, he said, has given Jharkhand a new identity on the medical map of the world.
