Jharkhand records highest number of deaths in elephant attacks previous years

Ranchi: In Jharkhand, 133 people have died from wild elephant attacks in the year 2021-22 which is the highest in the country. Jharkhand is followed by Odisha (112), West Bengal (77), Chhattisgarh (64) and Assam (63), according to the data released by the ministry of environment, forest and climate change in the Rajya Sabha.

Moreover, the state was also second (291) in terms of cumulative deaths in the man-elephant conflict in the last three years, the first being Odisha (322).

The data also showed the loss of human lives in elephant attacks increased manifold in the state last year. In 2019-20, there were 84 deaths, which dipped to 74 in 2020-21.

But it crossed 100 the next year, which, wildlife experts said, should serve as a warning sign for the authorities to address the concerns.
