Jharkhand High Court Rebukes Govt for Stalling Civic Polls

Ranchi – The Jharkhand High Court on Tuesday pulled up the state government for delaying municipal elections and summoned the Chief Secretary and Urban Development Principal Secretary during contempt proceedings.

Justice Ananda Sen said the government was ignoring repeated court orders and warned of possible contempt action. The court asked the Chief Secretary to submit a definite timeline for elections by September 10.

Municipal polls were to be completed by April 2023, but the process has been stuck due to the pending “triple test” on OBC quota. With no elected representatives, civic bodies across the state have been under bureaucratic control for over two years.
