IMD Warns of Week-Long Thunderstorms Across Jharkhand, Strong Winds Likely Till May 16

Jamshedpur: Jharkhand is expected to experience a prolonged spell of stormy weather as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has extended its thunderstorm and lightning warning across the state till May 16. Several districts are likely to witness rain, lightning, and strong gusty winds over the coming days.

According to the weather department, thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and wind speeds of 40–50 kmph are likely in most parts of the state on May 11, except some north-western areas.

The situation may become more intense on May 12, especially in southern and central Jharkhand, where wind speeds could rise to 50–60 kmph. Other districts are also expected to receive scattered rainfall along with gusty winds.

The weather activity is likely to intensify further between May 13 and 14. Districts such as Ranchi, Ramgarh, Bokaro, Dhanbad, Gumla, and Khunti are expected to face severe thunderstorms and strong winds. Similar conditions are also likely in Dumka, Deoghar, and Jamtara.

At the same time, districts including Sahibganj, Pakur, Godda, Giridih, Hazaribagh, Koderma, and Lohardaga may witness moderate thunderstorm activity with winds touching 50 kmph.

Meteorologists said the changing weather pattern is being driven by active atmospheric systems over eastern India, including an upper air cyclonic circulation over Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and nearby regions.

The administration has advised residents to remain cautious during thunderstorms, avoid open areas during lightning strikes, and stay alert for sudden weather changes.

“The weather is changing very quickly these days. Strong winds and dark clouds appear suddenly, especially in the afternoon. We are keeping emergency lights ready and avoiding going out unless necessary,” said Rajesh Verma, a resident of Bistupur in Jamshedpur.
