Ranchi: During the ongoing budget session of the Legislative Assembly, condolences were passed in honour of several eminent personalities and common citizens who passed away. The resolution was unanimously passed in the Assembly, expressing deep sorrow over the demise of individuals from various fields. A two-minute silence was observed in the House to pray for the peace of their souls.
Chief Minister Hemant Soren presented the condolence motion, stating that the state has lost many important personalities whose contributions will always be remembered. He expressed his sympathy to the bereaved families and assured the state government’s support in their grief. Assembly Speaker Rabindranath Mahto also conveyed his condolences, stating that this loss is irreplaceable, and that they will carry forward the memories of the departed. On this occasion, leaders from different parties also expressed their condolences and paid tribute to the departed souls.
The following personalities were remembered during the budget session of the Assembly: Manmohan Singh, Ratan Nawal Tata, Sitaram Yechury, Om Prakash Chautala, S M Krishna, Kunwar Natwar Singh, Sadhan Bhagat, Baccha Singh, Chhatruram Mahato, Bairagi Oraon, Gulab Singh Munda, Manorama Singh, Dr. Krishnanand Jha, Vishwanath Singh, Ganesh Paswan, Preetish Nandy, General Padmanabhan, Sharda Sinha, Ustad Zakir Hussain, Shyam Benegal, and others.
Manmohan Singh, who served as the Prime Minister of India from 2004 to 2014, passed away on December 26, 2024. In 1971, he was appointed as the Economic Advisor in the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, and in 1972, he became the Chief Economic Advisor in the Ministry of Finance. Singh served as the Governor of the Reserve Bank of India from 1982 to 1985, as Prime Minister’s Economic Advisor, Chairman of the University Grants Commission, and as the Finance Minister of India from 1991 to 1996. He was awarded the Padma Vibhushan in 1987, and in 1993 and 1994, he was honored with the “Best Finance Minister” awards by Asia Money. His tenure marked the era of economic liberalization, privatization, and globalization in India. His passing is a huge loss to the political and economic world.
India’s prominent industrialist and honorary Chairman of Tata Sons, Ratan Nawal Tata, passed away on October 9, 2024. Tata was honored with several awards including Padma Bhushan in 2000, Padma Vibhushan in 2008, and an honorary fellowship from the London School of Economics and Political Science in 2007. His passing is an irreplaceable loss to the social and industrial sectors.
Similarly, Sitaram Yechury, a veteran leader of the Left movement in Indian politics for nearly five decades, passed away on September 12, 2024. Yechury served as a member of the Rajya Sabha from 2005 to 2017. His death has deeply saddened the political community.
Following the condolence motion, the Assembly was adjourned until 11:00 AM on February 25.
