Jamshedpur — Jharkhand Police recovered gold jewellery valued at ₹1.5 crore that had been looted from a trader in East Singhbhum district, within 18 hours of the daring heist, officials reported on Tuesday.
Two of the three individuals involved in the crime have been arrested, while efforts continue to capture the third suspect.
The robbery occurred on Monday evening in Chakulia town. The victim, identified as Arun Nandi alias Khokan Nandi, owns Prapti Jewellers near Birsa Chowk in the Chakulia Nagar Panchayat area of Jamshedpur.
According to police accounts, the incident unfolded around 8:15 p.m. as Nandi was returning home to Mistripada after closing his shop for the day. Carrying his usual bag containing around 1.5 kg of gold ornaments and ₹50,000 in cash, he was confronted at his doorstep by three bike-borne assailants.
One of the attackers held a knife to his throat, while another pointed a pistol at him and snatched the bag. Nandi shouted for help, attracting attention from nearby residents, but the robbers managed to escape, threatening to shoot anyone who intervened.
The Chakulia police team, under Station In-charge Santosh Kumar, immediately launched an investigation and alerted police stations in nearby West Bengal, suspecting the robbers had fled in that direction.
Coordinating with West Bengal’s Jambani police, officers tracked down and arrested two suspects — Mohammad Rafiq from Rafiganj in Bihar’s Aurangabad district, and Niranjan Gaur from Bagbeda, Jamshedpur.
The stolen gold jewellery has been recovered, and both accused are now being questioned. A search is ongoing to apprehend the third accused, who remains absconding.
