Ranchi: Veteran Jharkhand leader and former minister Madhav Lal Singh passed away on Wednesday after a prolonged illness. He breathed his last at around 9:05 a.m. while undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Ranchi’s Bariatu area.
According to reports, Singh’s health had worsened in recent days, after which he was shifted from Bokaro to Ranchi for advanced treatment. Despite continuous medical care and monitoring by doctors, he could not recover.
A prominent political figure from Bokaro district, Madhav Lal Singh represented the Gomia Assembly constituency four times, winning elections in 1985, 1990, 2000 and 2009. His political journey spanned both undivided Bihar and the Jharkhand era, during which he remained vocal on regional development and public-interest issues.
During his long public career, he served as a minister in both the Bihar and Jharkhand governments. He had also held the position of Chairman of the Jharkhand State Religious Trust Board.
Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren expressed grief over his demise and described it as an irreparable loss to public life. In a social media post, the Chief Minister said Madhav Lal Singh had made significant contributions to public service and social causes over several decades.
Widely regarded as a grassroots leader, Singh enjoyed strong support in rural parts of the Gomia region and was known for his simple lifestyle and approachable nature. Despite occupying important political positions, he maintained the image of a humble and honest public representative.
Following the news of his death, supporters, well-wishers and political leaders from different parties gathered at the hospital and his residence to pay tribute. Several social and political organisations also mourned his passing, calling it a major loss for Jharkhand politics.
