Education Minister Jaggarnath Mahto cremated with full state honours at his ancestral village

Ranchi: Last rites of Jharkhand’s Education Minister Jaggarnath Mahto who had died while undergoing treatment at a hospital in Chennai was performed with full state honour at the banks of the Damodar river in Bhandaridah of Bermo block in Bokaro district on Friday.

His only son Akhilesh Mahto lit the pyre of his father on the banks of river during which thousands of his supporters and top leaders of the JMM including Chief Minister Hemant Soren himself were present. The 56-year-old leader had undergone lung transplant in Chennai after contracting Covid in November 2020.

He was a four-time MLA from Dumri and this was his first stint as Minister after Mahagathbandhan came into power in 2019. He was airlifted to Chennai after he fell ill during the state budget session last month. He is survived by a son and four daughters. The state government had declared a two-day mourning period and also cancelled a cabinet meeting scheduled on Wednesday evening.

As part of the state mourning all government offices had remained closed while the national flag hoisted at the government offices and buildings was flown at half mast. Earlier the mortal remains of the minister had reached on Friday morning at the Ranchi Airport from Chennai via Kolkata. Chief Minister Hemant Soren himself was at the airport to receive the body to which he also extended his shoulder and placed it on the specially decorated vehicle. 

Accompanied by a convoy the mortal remains reached at the Jharkhand Vidhan Sabha were a guard of honour was given by the jawans of the Jharkhand Armed Police and leaders cutting across party lines gave their tributes to the minister who was popularly known as Jaggarnath Da.

Apart from Chief Minister Hemant Soren Jharkhand Assembly Speaker Ravindra Nath Mahto Union Minister Annapurna Devi Cabinet Ministers of the Jharkhand government including Aalamgir Aalam, Satyanand Bhokta, Hafizul Hassan, Mithlesh Thakur, Banna Gupta and Badal were also present on the occasion.

Among other key personalities, the legislature wing leader of BJP Babulal Marandi Independent MLA Saryu Senior JMM MLA Dr Stephen Marandi and many Congress and JMM MLAs also paid their tributes. Prominent officials of the state government including Chief Secretary Sukhdev Singh DGP Ajay Kumar Singh and other police and administrative officials also paid their final tributes to the leader.

Later the body was taken to the camp office of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha where leaders and party workers also paid their tributes to Jaggarnath Mahto. From the part office the mortal remains of the education minister were taken in a convoy of vehicles to his ancestral village of Simarkuli in Alargo panchayat in Bhandaridah of Bermo block in Bokaro district where his cremation took place on the banks of Damodar river with full state honours.
