AJSU wrests Ramgarh from Congress in Bypolls, Sunita Chowdhary defeats Bajrang Mahto by nearly 22,000 votes

Ramgarh: In a severe jolt to the Mahagathbandhan government of Jharkhand and the Congress party in particular the AJSU party won the by-polls on the Ramgarh seat of the assembly as party candidate Sunita Chowdhary defeated Bajrang Mahto of the Congress by nearly 22,000 votes.

As per the figures available on the site of the Election Commission of India Sunita Chowdhary got 1,15,669 votes while Bajrang Mahto got 93,699 votes. Sunita Chowdhary is the wife of AJSU party’s Giridih MP Chandraprakash Chowdhary thus winning by 21,970 votes.

She led against her nearest rival in all 12 rounds of the counting which was held at the counting hall at Ramgarh College. Voting on the seat was held on February 27 in which an average voter turnout of 67.96 percent was recorded. Despite 18 candidates in the fray the main battle in the elections was between Bajrang Mahto of the Congress and Sunita Chowdhary of the AJSU party.

While Congress is part of the Mahagathbandhan government of Jharkhand led by the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha, AJSU is in the NDA folder led by the BJP. The by-polls were necessitated on the seat after Congress MLA Mamta Devi lost the membership of the house after she was awarded five years of imprisonment by a Hazaribagh MP-MLA court on December 13, 2022, in connection with the Gola Firing Incident case.

The by-poll was the fifth in the present tenure of the Mahagathbandhan government of Jharkhand being led by JMM’s Hemant Soren as after coming to power in December 2019 it had to face bypolls in Dumka Bermo Madhupur and Mandar in which all the seats were saved by the parties in power but unfortunately, the Congress party lost its sitting seat in the Ramgarh bypolls.
