Archana Puran Singh Raises Concerns Over AI’s Environmental Impact Amid Mumbai Water Crisis

Mumbai: Actress Archana Puran Singh has voiced concerns over the environmental impact of artificial intelligence, saying the growing use of AI is adding to the problem of water scarcity.

Sharing a video on social media, Archana was seen driving through Mumbai’s Malad area with her husband Parmeet Sethi and their sons, Aaryamann Sethi and Ayushmaan Sethi, while discussing the city’s ongoing water shortage.

During the conversation, Ayushmaan remarked that despite rapid technological advancements, people are still struggling to access basic necessities like water.

Aaryamann added that AI systems consume significant amounts of water. Echoing his point, Archana said that AI tools require large quantities of water to operate, claiming that even asking questions on AI platforms leads to substantial water consumption.

Ayushmaan also shared his personal experience, revealing that while creating an AI-generated version of himself for one of his episodes, he learned about the technology’s environmental cost.

“Someone told me it wastes so much water, and after that I stopped using it. I didn’t want to continue,” he said.

Aaryamann further criticised what he described as the unnecessary use of AI, saying many people use the technology casually without considering its environmental impact.

Mumbai has been facing a severe water shortage following a delayed monsoon. Although rainfall intensified during the final week of June, experts have noted that rapid urbanisation and extensive concretisation have reduced groundwater recharge, limiting the benefits of the rains.

The discussion also comes at a time when many parts of the world are witnessing extreme weather conditions, with prolonged heatwaves in Europe and climate-related disruptions linked to global weather patterns such as the Super El NiƱo.
