Fraudsters allegedly duped people by pretending to be executives from Flipkart, Amazon, PhonePe and Airtel Payment Bank
Deoghar: In a major crackdown on cyber crime, Deoghar Police arrested five alleged cyber fraudsters during a special raid conducted on May 14 under the supervision of Senior DSP Raja Kumar Mitra and following instructions from SP Praveen Pushkar.
According to police, the accused were running fake customer care services in the names of popular platforms such as Flipkart, Amazon and PhonePe to cheat unsuspecting people. They allegedly contacted victims using fake mobile numbers and lured them with false promises related to PM Kisan Yojana benefits and easy loan approvals.
Investigators said the gang also posed as officials of Airtel Payment Bank. They reportedly informed customers that their Airtel Payment Bank cards had been blocked and then convinced them to share sensitive information through the Airtel Thanks App on the pretext of reactivating the cards.
Acting on a tip-off, police carried out raids at different locations in Deoghar district and arrested the five accused — Wasim Ansari, Rajesh Das, Kailash Kumar Das, Dibakar Das and Ajit Das.
Police said Rajesh Das, around 24 years old, had previously been sent to jail in a cyber crime case registered at Deoghar Cyber Police Station in 2022.
During the raids, officers seized 11 mobile phones, nine SIM cards and two cloned SIM cards. Initial scrutiny of the seized devices reportedly confirmed the involvement of the accused in cyber fraud activities.
The operation was carried out by a team comprising Sub-Inspector Lalit Khalkho of Cyber Police Station, Assistant Sub-Inspector Habil Lugun of Pathradda OP, Assistant Sub-Inspector Bharat Singh of Sarath Police Station and other armed personnel.
Police said investigations are continuing to identify and track down other members connected to the cyber fraud network.
