Los Angeles- Singer-songwriter Ellie Goulding has spoken candidly about her personal life, revealing that she has dated women at different points between what she described as “toxic, fleeting and passionate” relationships with men.
The 39-year-old artist, who shares a four-year-old son, Alfred, with her former husband Caspar Jopling and is currently expecting a child with her boyfriend Beau Minniear, said she has enjoyed romantic relationships with women in the past, according to Female First UK.
Goulding made the comments during a conversation with Sports Illustrated model Brooks Nader on the reality show Love Thy Nader. When Nader jokingly suggested she might consider dating women following a breakup, Goulding responded light-heartedly, saying that it was something she herself had done.
“That’s what I do. It works every time,” Goulding said. She went on to describe intense relationships as thrilling but often short-lived, adding that such experiences can feel uniquely powerful. “The most exciting love comes for a reason — it’s toxic and fleeting and passionate. It feels incredible, like no one else has ever loved this way. Honestly, it’s great material for songs,” she remarked.
Goulding also acknowledged that many of her experiences feed directly into her music. “Annoyingly, I sometimes do it for the plot so I can write a song about it,” she said. “We should appreciate relationships for what they are in the moment, and when they end, be grateful that they happened at all. It’s about being the amazing woman that you are — men are just an accessory from time to time.”
According to Female First UK, Goulding confirmed earlier in 2024 that she and Caspar Jopling had ended their marriage, noting that the separation had taken place privately some time before it was made public.
In a statement shared on Instagram at the time, she said, “Caspar and I separated privately some time ago. We remain the closest of friends and have been successfully co-parenting with our son’s best interests at heart.”
She added that both were committed to protecting their family’s privacy and would not be commenting further on the matter.
