SC issues contempt notices to chief secretaries of six states, including Jharkhand

Ranchi: The Supreme Court issued contempt notices on Wednesday to the Chief Secretaries of Delhi, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Maharashtra, Telangana, and Bengal for failing to comply with orders regarding medical facilities and other benefits for retired High Court judges. A bench of Justice Abhay S. Oka and Justice Ujjal Bhuiyan stated that these states had not followed the directions issued on February 18. The bench clarified, “Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Maharashtra, Telangana, Bengal, and Delhi have not complied with all the directives issued by this court.”

The bench directed that contempt notices be issued to the Chief Secretaries of these states, asking them to explain why action should not be taken against them for contempt of court. The next hearing of the case has been scheduled for July 25. The Supreme Court also stated that personal appearance of the Chief Secretaries is not required, provided a responsible IAS officer attends either in person or virtually.
