With increase in mercury, clamour grows for closure of nursery & primary schools

Ranchi: With the temperature crossing the 40 degrees mark on an average calls have increased from anxious parents who are now wanting closure of schools, especially those going to nursery and primary sections.

Chief Minister Hemant Soren himself had taken note of the circumstances and had assured that soon the state government will take a decision on the issue. He even had appealed to the people to allow the buses carrying children space the likes of ambulances so that the children can reach their homes safely.

With the MET predicting more heatwaves intensifying this week the parents have got anxious and worried both as most of the buses being operated by the schools have been found flaunting the safety norms as a result of which the district administration has also served notices to at least two dozen school management and owners of buses.

Though with the rise in temperature the government issued orders that the schools will run till 12 PM only but that has not been able to satisfy the anxious parents as unfortunately in the capital many schools are situated far away from the populated areas which mean average children travel at least 10 kilometers daily to reach their school.

A parent whose child studies at Loyola School said that the bus comes to the stop at 7 to pick up the child from the school starting at 8 AM. The school runs till 12 PM officially but on most days the kids come and board the buses around 12.40 PM which means by the time they reach home it’s almost 1.30-2 PM which is a tough ask for five-year-old children.

Similarly, the mother of a child who sends her daughter to a premier school in Doranda from Ratu Road said that by the time her daughter comes home in the afternoon she is completely drained out as the buses also operate with open windows.

There have been also many reports from the Palamu Divison which remains in the grip of the heatwave of students falling unconscious during school hours due to extreme heat conditions. People are hoping that soon the government will take a decision for the sake of the children and their health.
