Whoopi Goldberg Admits She Prefers Being Single, Says Relationships Aren’t for Her

Los Angeles- Actress Whoopi Goldberg has revealed that she believes she is not suited for romantic relationships and prefers to remain single. The Oscar-winning star has stayed unmarried for several decades following her divorce from actor Lyle Trachtenberg in 1995.

Goldberg shared that she has no desire to share her personal space or daily life with a partner, according to Female First UK. Speaking to Interview magazine, she said that her experiences over the years have made her realise that relationships are not for everyone.

“In the last 25 years, I’ve realised that not everyone is meant to be in a relationship. Some people are better suited to short-term connections. I don’t want to live with anyone. I lived with my daughter, and that’s all I can manage,” she said. “I care deeply for many people, but I don’t need them living with me or sharing a bed with me.”

Goldberg, who has a 51-year-old daughter, Alex, with her first husband Alvin Martin, was also married to David Claessen from 1986 to 1988 before tying the knot with Trachtenberg in 1994. She admitted that maintaining relationships requires considering a partner’s needs, which she finds challenging.

“I’m not good at relationships because they require you to think about another person constantly. I already have enough to focus on with my daughter, her husband, my grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and my work,” she explained.

The actress also said she rarely feels lonely, as she is surrounded by family, friends, and colleagues. She added that societal expectations often make people feel uncomfortable being single.

“Many people are made to feel there’s something wrong if they’re not in a relationship. But sometimes, you just want to be alone — even when it comes to simple things like enjoying a meal without having to consider someone else’s preferences,” she said.

The 70-year-old actress has earlier stated that one of the reasons she avoids relationships is her reluctance to share financial responsibilities.
