Ranchi: The iconic Kanke Dam in Ranchi has become overrun with water hyacinth, prompting the municipal corporation to initiate a large-scale cleaning operation. Acting on the directives of the municipal administrator, the authorities are using advanced weed harvesting machines to remove the invasive aquatic plant and restore the cleanliness and water quality of the dam.
Municipal officials stated that the rapid spread of water hyacinth was disrupting the natural flow of water and disturbing the ecological balance of the reservoir. The excessive growth not only affects the quality of water but also diminishes the dam’s visual appeal and overall usability.
The decision to deploy mechanized equipment marks a significant step towards preserving the dam’s health and ensuring clean water for the area.
Water hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes) is a fast-growing aquatic plant commonly found in ponds, lakes, and stagnant water bodies. It can quickly cover large water surfaces, blocking sunlight and reducing oxygen levels in the water. This leads to the death of fish and other aquatic life, severely impacting biodiversity and halting the growth of other native water plants.
The spread of water hyacinth poses a serious ecological threat, and timely intervention is crucial to prevent long-term damage to aquatic ecosystems. The ongoing cleanup at Kanke Dam aims to restore ecological balance and safeguard one of Ranchi’s key water bodies.
