Three Killed in Lohardaga Highway Collision; Protests Stall Traffic for Hours

Lohardaga: A tragic road accident on National Highway-39 in Jharkhand’s Lohardaga district on Friday resulted in the death of three people, including a mother and her son, officials said.

The incident took place near Dhuluakhunta under the Kuru police station area when a liquor-laden goods vehicle collided head-on with a scooty. The crash was so intense that two victims died on the spot, while the third succumbed to injuries on the way to the hospital.

The deceased were identified as Bishun Bhagatain, her son Kishore Bhagat, and her nephew Niranjan Oraon, all residents of Ronhaiya Kolsimri village. They were reportedly travelling to Mandar hospital to visit Bhagatain’s husband, who is currently undergoing treatment.

Police said the goods vehicle was en route from Ranchi to Palamu when it rammed into the scooty. Following the collision, the vehicle overturned, scattering liquor bottles across the highway.

The accident drew a large crowd of villagers to the scene, and some attempted to collect the spilled liquor. Police personnel reached promptly and brought the situation under control.

In protest, locals blocked the highway demanding compensation for the victims’ families, leading to a major traffic jam on the Kuru-Ranchi road for nearly two hours.

Administrative officials later intervened and held discussions with the protesters, after which the blockade was lifted. Immediate assistance, including cash support and essential supplies, was provided to the grieving families.

Meanwhile, three occupants of the goods vehicle — Vinat Munda, Vikas Minz, and Tinku Ram from Kanke in Ranchi — were also injured. Two of them, reported to be in serious condition, were referred to RIMS, Ranchi for advanced treatment.

Police have initiated further investigation into the case.
