Tension in Giridih after woman’s death sparks violence, in-laws’ house torched

Tension flared in Giridih after the suspicious death of a 26-year-old woman triggered violent protests, with her in-laws’ house allegedly set on fire by her family members.

The deceased, identified as Bindiya Devi, wife of Chandan Kumar, was found in a well near her residence in Shyamnagar Tola on Tuesday evening. As news spread, her relatives from Hazaribagh rushed to the village, and grief soon turned into outrage.

The woman’s family accused her in-laws of harassment, leading to a confrontation that quickly escalated. According to eyewitnesses, an agitated mob vandalised the house before dousing it with petrol and setting it ablaze, destroying belongings within minutes.

Police from the local station reached the spot and attempted to control the situation, while fire brigade teams managed to extinguish the flames after significant effort. The body has been recovered and sent for post-mortem examination to determine the exact cause of death.

Initial reports suggest there may have been ongoing domestic disputes, raising the possibility of suicide. However, the victim’s family has alleged foul play, claiming it to be a case of murder.

Authorities have since deployed security personnel in the area to prevent further unrest. Officials stated that the situation is now under control, and action is being taken to identify and proceed against those involved in the arson.
