Tara Shahdev case: Life imprisonment to Ranjit Kohli, 10 and 15 years jail to Kaushal Rani and Mushtaq Ahmed

Ranchi: A CBI court has sentenced a life sentence to Ranjit Kohli and slapped a fine of Rs 50 thousand in the torture of former national shooter Tara Shahdev. Ranjit Kohli’s mother Kaushal Rani has been sentenced to 10 years and a fine of Rs 50 thousand has been imposed. Former High Court Registrar (Monitoring) Mushtaq Ahmed has also been punished. He has been sentenced to 15 years rigorous imprisonment along with a fine of Rs 50,000. 

The court of Special Judge PK Sharma of Ranchi CBI Court has found Ranjit Kohli guilty under sections 120B, 376,323,298,506 and 496 of the IPC. Kaushalya Rani has been found guilty under sections 120B, 298, 506 and 323 of the IPC. Former High Court Registrar (Surveillance) Mushtaq Ahmed has been found guilty under sections 120B and 298 of the IPC. 

The court had on September 30 found them guilty. While pronouncing the verdict, the court convicted the main accused Ranjit Singh Kohli alias Rakibul Hasan, his mother Kaushal Rani, and former High Court Registrar (Surveillance) Mushtaq Ahmed. The special CBI court has found all three guilty of conspiracy, forced religious conversion, fraudulent marriage, assault, getting bitten by a dog and abuse. In this case, Owerri Public Prosecutor Priyanshu Singh Lok and Prosecutor Ravi Kumar had recorded the statements of 26 witnesses. On the basis of this, the accused were found guilty. 

On the orders of Jharkhand High Court, CBI took over this case in 2015. The hearing of this case has lasted for almost eight years. In which charges were framed against the three accused on July 3, 2018. 26 witnesses have been presented by CBI. On September 26, written arguments were presented in the CBI court on behalf of the defense in the National Rifle Shooter Tara Shahdev harassment case. Ranjit Singh Kohli and Tara Shahdev were married on July 7, 2014.

After marriage, Tara Shahdev started facing harassment and assault by her husband Rakibul Hasan/Ranjeet Kohli. The police started an investigation after the cases of marriage by hiding religion, sexual harassment and torture for religious conversion came to light. Later, on the orders of the Jharkhand High Court, CBI took over the case in 2015. Then the investigation started. After the completion of the investigation, a charge sheet was filed against the accused in the year 2018. 

Regarding the revelation of this entire matter, Tara had told that one day she received an invitation for an Iftar party from Minister Haji Hussain Ansari at her in-laws’ house. In which the name of Mr. Rakibul Hasan Khan was addressed. Tara had also handed over this card to the court. Tara said that a rift arose between them when Ranjeet reached home with 20-25 pilgrims and started pressurizing them for forced conversion. During this time, when she protested, she was badly beaten. Many times she was bitten by a dog so that she might convert out of fear.

Tara says that Ranjeet alias Rakibul Hasan used to disappear from the house throughout the night. He used to come at four in the morning. What work he does is not known to date. According to Tara, her mehendi ceremony took place at Hotel Orchid and her wedding at Hotel Radisson Blu.

After marriage, Ranjeet used to live with her in flat number R-05 of Blair Apartment behind Mahavir Tower on Main Road. When Tara had revealed the matter, she had told how Rakibul Hasan had crossed all limits of cruelty. While keeping her under his custody for about one and a half months, he neither gave food or drink nor allowed her to meet anyone. He repeatedly said that you will have to accept Islam. If you don’t do this, your face will not remain safe.
