NIA Files Fresh Charges Against Three in Jharkhand Maoist Terror Funding Case

Ranchi – The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has filed a supplementary chargesheet before a Special NIA Court in Ranchi against three individuals in connection with a 2023 CPI (Maoist) terror funding and conspiracy case in Jharkhand, an official said on Saturday.

The chargesheet names Krishna Hansda, Abhijit Korah, and Ramdayal Mahto for their alleged roles in collecting funds for terrorist activities and organizing training camps for the banned Maoist outfit. While Abhijit is from Bihar, the other two are residents of Jharkhand.

According to the NIA, the three were active members of the proscribed CPI (Maoist) and part of a larger conspiracy involving extortion, armed threats, and forced recruitment in the Parasnath area of Giridih district.

The case initially began with the arrest of Krishna Hansda in January 2023 from the Lucio Forest area under Dumri Police Station in Giridih. Police had recovered extortion money, a 7.65 mm pistol, and incriminating documents from him, leading to the registration of an FIR against all three and others unknown at the time. A primary chargesheet had already been filed against Hansda.

Hansda, also known as Saurav Da or Avinash Da, has now been additionally charged under multiple sections of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA), 1967, for recruiting youth and financing terror activities, as well as under Section 25(6) of the Arms Act, 1959, for carrying illegal arms. He was reportedly a Regional Committee Member of CPI (Maoist).

Abhijit Korah, also known as Matla Korah or Sunil Korah, an armed cadre of the CPI (Maoist), has been chargesheeted under IPC Sections 120B (criminal conspiracy) and 121A (waging war against the state), Sections 386 and 387 (extortion), Section 17 of the Criminal Law Amendment Act, 1908, and multiple sections of the UAPA.

Ramdayal Mahto, alias Nilesh Da or Bachchan Da, identified as a Special Area Committee (SAC) member, faces similar charges under IPC, the Criminal Law Amendment Act, and the UAPA, including sections related to terror financing, conspiracy, training, and membership in a banned organization.

The NIA formally took over the investigation in June 2023, re-registering it as RC-01/2023/NIA/RNC.
