Ranchi: Media in-charge of the Pradesh Congress Rakesh Sinha criticised the Modi government for allegedly using GST (Goods and Services Tax) to exploit farmers and the public while enriching its capitalist allies. Speaking at a press conference at the Congress office on Thursday, Sinha claimed that the government’s development model resembled that of Ravana’s, where the wealth was concentrated in the hands of a few while the common people suffered.
He said that the entire country is suffering due to the ‘terror’ of GST, with farmers being hit the hardest. Sinha pointed out that chemicals used by farmers to protect their crops from pests are taxed at 28%, and that advance taxes are being levied on cotton, a direct result of the government’s anti-farmer policies.
Sinha also criticised the government for writing off Rs 17 lakh crore of Non-Performing Assets (NPAs) of its capitalist friends and granting them exemptions worth two lakh crores in taxes, in return for receiving electoral bonds. He said that while the original purpose of the tax was to benefit everyone, the government is instead using it to fill its own coffers.
